SmartSuite ships as two applications. SmartSuite Web is a desktop browser application for authoring and managing documents. SmartSuite Mobile is a native iPhone and iPad application for reading and working with those documents away from a desk.
This article sets out the browsers, devices and display sizes we support for each.
At a glance
| Application | Requirement |
|---|---|
| SmartSuite Web | Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, current version, browser window at least 1024 px wide, landscape orientation. |
| SmartSuite Mobile | iPhone or iPad running iOS or iPadOS 18 or later. Available from the Apple App Store. |
SmartSuite Web
Supported browsers
SmartSuite Web is tested and supported on the browsers listed below. Supported means the browser is included in our automated end-to-end test suite, which runs against the application on every release, and that defects reproducing on it are accepted as in-scope faults.
| Browser | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Google Chrome | Supported | Primary target. Covered by the automated test suite on every run. Windows and macOS. |
| Microsoft Edge | Supported | Shares Chrome's rendering engine and is covered by the same automated runs. Windows and macOS. |
| Apple Safari | Planned | Not yet supported. Safari joins the supported list once it is added to the automated test suite and passing. Until then, use Chrome or Edge on macOS. |
| Mozilla Firefox | Not supported | Not tested and not in the test matrix. The application may work, but we make no claim and will not fix Firefox-specific defects. |
Browser versions
We support the current released version of each supported browser. Earlier versions are not tested, and defects that reproduce only on them are out of scope. In practice this is a low bar: both Chrome and Edge update themselves automatically, so most users are already on a supported version without doing anything.
Our browser list is deliberately short. A browser appears above only if it is in the automated test matrix and passing. We would rather name two browsers we verify on every release than four we check occasionally.
Display size
SmartSuite Web is designed for desktop and laptop displays. The behaviour below has been measured across the main working surfaces: the module dashboard, the All Documents table, and the document editor.
| Browser window width | Status | Behaviour |
|---|---|---|
| 1024 px and above | Supported | Full layout, no compromises. Everything is reachable and nothing overflows. Covers laptops, desktop monitors, and iPad in landscape. |
| 768 px to 1023 px | Degraded | Usable but cramped. Tables keep the sidebar fixed and push right-hand columns into an internal scroll. The editor collapses its outline panel and some toolbar controls are clipped. Not recommended for sustained authoring. |
| Below 768 px | Not supported | The layout breaks. Navigation overlaps, sidebars disappear, and the editor canvas is clipped. Use SmartSuite Mobile on a phone rather than the browser application. |
| Setting | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Minimum resolution | 1024 × 768 |
| Recommended resolution | 1280 × 800 or higher |
| Most comfortable working width | 1280 to 1440 px |
| Orientation | Landscape |
| Aspect ratios | All standard desktop ratios: 16:9, 16:10, 4:3 |
A note on aspect ratio and window size
Layout depends on width, not aspect ratio. We have verified 16:10 (1440 × 900 and 1280 × 800), 4:3 (1024 × 768) and portrait orientations. Screen height changes only how much vertical scrolling is needed. Provided the browser window is at least 1024 px wide and in landscape, the aspect ratio of the display does not matter.
The figure that counts is the width of the browser window, not the display. A 2560 px monitor with SmartSuite docked into a narrow half-width window is a narrow window as far as the application is concerned. If the layout looks wrong, maximising the window is the first thing to try.
What is not supported on the web application
- Phones. Use SmartSuite Mobile.
- Tablets in portrait orientation. iPad in landscape meets the 1024 px floor; in portrait it does not. SmartSuite Mobile is the supported route on iPad.
- Browsers outside the supported list, including Firefox, Safari, and browsers embedded inside other applications.
- Earlier browser versions than the current release.
SmartSuite Mobile
SmartSuite Mobile is a native application distributed through the Apple App Store. It is built for crew and staff who need their documents on a device, including in environments where connectivity is limited.
| Platform | Status | Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone | Supported | The two most recent major versions of iOS. Universal application, no separate download. |
| iPad | Supported | The two most recent major versions of iPadOS. Universal application, no separate download. |
| Android phones and tablets | Not supported | There is no Android application. |
| Setting | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Devices | iPhone and iPad |
| Operating system | The two most recent major versions of iOS and iPadOS. |
| Distribution | Apple App Store, or your organisation's mobile device management platform |
| Orientation | Portrait and landscape |
How the version window moves
We support the current major release of iOS and iPadOS and the one before it. When Apple ships a new major version, the oldest of the three leaves support. Devices that cannot run a supported version of iOS will not be able to install current releases of SmartSuite Mobile, so this is worth checking when you plan a device refresh or a mobile device management rollout.
How this is verified
Every statement in this article is backed by a test or a build constraint rather than by documentation alone.
Automated end-to-end testing. Supported browsers are covered by an automated end-to-end suite that exercises the real application on every release. A browser we claim is a browser in that matrix. A browser absent from the matrix is one we do not claim, which is exactly the position Firefox is in and, for now, Safari too.
Measured, not estimated. The display thresholds above come from an empirical sweep of the authenticated application across viewport widths and aspect ratios, on the module dashboard, the All Documents table and the document editor. They are not design intentions.
Known limitation. Below 1024 px the application does not currently warn you that you are outside the supported range. The layout degrades, and below 768 px it breaks, without an explicit message. Improving this is on our backlog. In the meantime, if a user reports an unfamiliar layout problem, the browser window width is the first thing to check.
