ERCS was created in reference to the Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2020/2034, in close cooperation with the Member States and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (‘Agency’).
The methodology only applies to Regulators; However, some Regulators may require Operators to complete it.
ERCS should support the competent authorities of the Member States and the Agency in their assessment of occurrences, its key purpose should be the identification and classification in a harmonized manner of the level of risk posed by each occurrence to aviation safety, therefore ERCS should allow for the identification of rapid actions needed in reply to high-risk safety occurrences.
Using ERCS in Centrik
If enabled ERCS will appear within the classify phase of a safety case, just below the ERC score calculation.
ERCS is calculated from the introduction of Key Risk Areas from aggregated information, and the identification and comparison of their risk levels through a Potential Loss of Life classification, to create a Severity Score for this occurrence.
1. Clicking on the ‘Edit’ button enables these areas for selection
2. Select the Key Risk area for this incident from the dropdown available (the written text is pre-populated from system configuration)
3. Select the Severity score for this incident from the dropdown available (the written text is pre-populated from system configuration)
When both values are selected these areas will provide a combined Severity score
After the severity score has been calculated its time to move into the Barriers.
ERCS introduces the ERCS Barrier Model, consisting of 8 barriers. Ultimately, the ERCS barrier model shall determine how close the occurrence has been to a potential accident. Each barrier has a barrier weight and through the identification of their effectiveness a Barrier Weighting score is calculated.
4. Move through the 8 barriers, selecting a score for each event against their level of effectiveness
When all areas have been selected a barrier weighting score will be calculated
5. Click the ‘Save’ button to lock in these details
An overall ERCS score (the Severity score combined with the Barrier score) is provided at the top of the page next to the ERC score ERCS is separate from the ERC, Event Risk Classification methodology).
